Controversial car dealer Khalif Kairo real names Joseph Wambui has told a Nairobi court that he cannot afford to pay cash bail as he is broke.
Through his lawyer, Kairo told Chief Magistrate Lucas Onyina that he has abruptly become bankrupt and he cannot afford to raise Sh 500,000 cash bail he has so far been ordered to pay to secure his release.
He produced in court his statement which shows that his current bank account balance reads only Sh 61,000 which far much below what the court required him to pay for his release.
The court empathized with his current situation and released him on a personal bond of Sh 3 million meaning he will only have to sign a commitment that he will indeed attend court throughout the hearing of the case.
He had already paid Sh 2 M cash bail in the other two cases.
Early this week, Kairo had asked court to release his passport to him so that he could attend a crowdfunding event in the US.
Magistrate Onyina in released the passport to Kairo, saying that although the prosecution had objected to the said release, the accused person rights including freedom to movement that should not be limited.
“The accused herein has been travelling outside the country and has always returned, there’s no fear that he will not return to the country should the passport be released. The application for the release of the passport is hereby allowed,” the court ruled.
The court directed Kairo to return the passport to court upon jetting back to the country.
Hearing of the case will be on May 26, 2025.
