A truck driver was charged on Monday in a Nairobi court with stealing 560 bags of Urea fertilizer that were in transit to the Kenya National Cereals and Produce Board (NCPB).
Benson Omondi Bonyo appeared before Milimani Chief Magistrate Bernard Ochoi, where he was charged with stealing goods in transit, contrary to Section 279 (C) of the Penal Code. Omondi pleaded not guilty to the charge.
The prosecution alleges that on August 23, in Mlolongo, Machakos Sub-County, along the Mombasa-Nairobi Highway, Omondi, together with others not before the court, stole 560 bags of Urea 46% Nitrogen fertilizer. The fertilizer, valued at Sh2,268,000, was the property of the NCPB Awendo branch.
According to the charge sheet, the fertilizer was stolen from a truck with registration No. KBU 962A, a Mercedes Axor, and trailer No. ZG 8156. The consignment was in transit from Yara East Africa Ltd (K), Jomvu-Madafuni, Mombasa, to the NCPB Awendo branch when it was allegedly stolen.
Omondi denied the charge and was released on a bond of Sh800,000.
