Popular Prison Warden Jackson Kuria Kihara alias CopShakur was on Thursday arraigned court for the alleged offense of inciting a mutiny and the DCI officers are seeking for 21 days to detain him.
According to the police, Kihara was arrested on January 15, 2025, at the Kamiti Maximum Prison staff residence.
The state told court that the DCI is investigating allegations related to the publication of false information contrary to Section 23 of the Computer Misuse and Cybercrimes Act, CAP 79C, and incitement to mutiny contrary to Section 47 of the Penal Code.
The court further heard that Kihara who joined the service in 2019, is trained in the use of various firearms and as a result, he may interfere with the investigations.
The prosecution informed Court that Kihara operates the social media account @copshakur on X (formerly Twitter) and if released he may interfere with the account.
However, the Law Society of Kenya objected to the detention, saying that there were no compelling reasons to warrant detention of the police officer for 21 days.
They requested that he be granted a cash bail of Ksh 1000 similar to the case of Senator Okiya Omtatah and 22 others who were arraigned in court in December 2024 facing similar allegations.
