Lobby groups calls on IPOA to investigate killing of protesters during Maandamano

Human Rights Activists groups have now called upon the Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) to investigate the extra judicial killings of protesters during Azimio Demos.

Over 30 lobby groups issued a press statement on Friday condemning the use of killings of citizens by police during maandamano.

They claim that according to their data, from July 7 to 19, there has been 27 extrajudicial, summary, and fatal police shootings.

The activists have stated the example of the five deaths in Mlolongo which they say is a clear example of state ordered executions.

“3 had gunshots to the head, 1 had gun-shot wound on the chest (close range), and a lady had gun-shot wound on the back,” the statement reads.

It is their claim that this shows that there was clear intention by the security agents to shoot to-kill because all the five shootings took place miles away from the ExpressWay where the main protests were ongoing.

They are also concerned with what they say is the latest trend where police are working with what appears to be private militia to allegedly attack and butcher people in Dandora and Kibera, Kisumu, Migori and Machakos.

“These strikes are taking place in the cover of darkness with hope of shielding perpetrators from accountability,” the statement reads.
