An elderly woman, Pamela Akinyi Wara, was charged in a Nairobi court for allegedly conspiring with her son, an inmate at Kamiti Maximum Prison, to steal Sh 7 million from a businesswoman. The money had been stolen from Purity Karambu Laird, and Wara is accused of receiving the stolen funds.
According to court documents, the alleged conspiracy took place between May 1, 2020, and September 17, 2020. Wara’s son, Hesbon Onyango Nyamweya, who is reportedly serving a life sentence at Kamiti Maximum Prison, is said to have coordinated the theft from within the prison.
The police claim that Wara, Nyamweya, and others not before the court, orchestrated the theft of Ksh 7,656,500 from Laird. Wara was also charged with dishonestly holding onto the stolen funds, knowing they had been illegally acquired.
Appearing before Milimani Law Courts Chief Magistrate Susan Shitubi, Wara denied the charges and was released on a Ksh 2 million bond. The case is scheduled for mention on September 5, 2024.
The court will continue to examine the details of this alleged conspiracy involving a prisoner and his accomplices outside the prison walls.
